Cut
May 2, 2008
Callie cuts herself. She doesn’t want to die, she only wants to feel the pain. Callie’s little brother Sam has severe allergies, and they constantly have to clean everything in the house so that Sam wont get sick. Her dad is always at work, and her mom is always cleaning or spending time with Sam. Callies’s mom works too, and most of the time she is too tired to spend anytime with her. She always has to bend her life around to fit Sam’s needs. She has to have the TV on mute when Sam and their mom are resting, and she has to be very quiet. When Callie finally gets fed up with her life, she takes her mom’s crafting knives and cuts many lines across her arms. Callie goes to the nurse one day because she is sick, and the nurse finds the cuts and calls Callie’s mom. That is how Callie became stuck at “Sea Pines,” a residential treatment facility.
The most important thing in the story is that Callie cuts herself. Without that key factor, the book would never have existed! The whole book is about Callie’s life at Sea Pines, and it wouldn’t have happened if Callie hadn’t cut herself.
The event of Callie cutting herself changed many peoples’ thoughts about her. Her own school wouldn’t let her back in until she had treatment because they thought she was a threat. Callie’s mom and dad wonder where they went wrong, and Sam has no idea why Callie is even at Sea Pines!
