Perfect

April 1, 2008

I read the book Perfect. This book is about a 15-year old girl, Isabelle, or Belly, battling the sickness bulimia. When Isabelle was 14, her dad died, and that’s what made her start to make herself throw-up. One day, her sister finds her in the bathroom with her finger down her through, and threatens to tell their mom. Isabelle bribes her sister with many thing, but she only wants her Mountain bike, something that Isabelle would never give up. Later that night, Isabelle’s sister tells their mom, and Isabelle and her mom both decide that she needs to go to group therapy. At Group, Isabelle is faced with the most popular girl in school, Ashley, and they have to overcome their differences to get better in Group.

The mood in this story is depressing. Here is this 15-year old girl ruining her body because her dad died. I can understand that she would be upset, but does she really need to hurt herself because of that?! She could have talked with her friends, or her sister, or even a teacher, but she decided to take out all the sadness and frustration in her life on her own body.

I really enjoy this type of book because it really makes you appreciate your life and what you have. I read it and I thought, ‘Wow, I thought my body was not the greatest, but just look at Isabelle, she’s stuck in therapy because she hates the way she looks!’ These kind of books also teach you the consequences of what these types of sicknesses can do to you.
